Welcome!

Dr. Hornedo Middle School opened in August of 1994 with 1300+ students from 3 elementary feeder schools and two other middle schools. Its feeder schools include Roberts, Polk, Rosa Guerrero, and Kolhberg Elementaries. Dr. Hornedo Middle School's colors are navy, silver, and white, while the school mascot is the "Tornado."
Hornedo is a new urban school that enrolls 1500+ students in grades 6-8th, with a professional staff of eighty-five teachers, a principal, two assistant principals, an assistant principal/student activities manager, an at-risk coordinator, two counselors, a librarian, a nurse, and a part time speech therapist. The support staff consists of a senior clerk, a registrar, attendence clerk, computer clerk, bookroom clerk, and two general clerks. In addition to the staffing, Hornedo has a custodial crew of eleven and a caffeteria staff of eight.

Our campus consists of one two-story building with one hundred classrooms, four stairwells, and an elevator. The building contains a cafeteria, a library, ten science labs, two computer labs for science, reading, and math. The gymnasium contains four locker rooms used for the physical education classes, as well as for the athletic departments. Band, orchestra, and choir each have seperate rooms with built in storage units for students' instruments.

Hornedo is organized into interdiscplinary teams at the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade levels. Each grade level consists of at least two teams which include approximately 150 students per team. One of the advantages of the teaming concept is that the core subject teachers (English, reading, history, math, and science) work together as a team , teaching the same 150 students in the block. These teachers share share a common conference period which enables them to plan and design lesson plans, discuss current issues in education, and meet together with parents to monitor and ensure that the students' needs are being met. This is helpful to parents because they can meet with most of their child's teachers at the same time rather than having to schedule separate conferences throughout the day. Another advantage to teaming is that all core subject teachers in the team generally have classrooms in the same hallway. This creates a "school within a school" atmosphere which makes the transition to middle school much easier. In addition, it helps the students to become acclimated to the "new" school building, thus making it easier for students to arrive to class on time.

Hornedo students begin each day in an advisory class. Advisory groups meet daily from 8:00 A.M. to 8:25 A.M. During this time, we have the Pledge of Allegiance and daily announcements. In addition Channel 1, a twelve minute news program, is shown. This focuses on current events and topics of interest to adolescents. It is also during this class that students will engage in activities on decision making, careers, and other important topics.
