If You Find Apparently Abandoned Wildlife

NESTLING BIRDS - Baby birds which are featherless or still in down
  1. Pick it up in your hand. If it feels cold to your touch, warm it slowly in your hand. The adult bird will accept her baby even if you have touched it.

  2. Return the baby to the nest if possible. It may be necessary to reattach the nest, to rebuild it, or to construct a new nest. To construct a nest use a strawberry (or similar) basket lined with grass or leaves. Attach the nest to a tree in the area and place the nestling(s) in it.

  3. If the nestling, or any bird, is injured, do not give it fluids. Put it in a box or sack in a warm, dark and quiet place. Immediately call a rehabilitator in your area.

FLEDGLING BIRDS - Baby Birds which are feathered and learning to fly

  1. Place the grounded fledgling in a tree, bush, etc. Adult birds will fly to it and feed it.

  2. Keep cats and dogs confined or inside. It will take up to three days for the fledgling to learn to fly. Flying does not come naturally. It must be learned.

  3. If the fledgling, or any bird, is injured do not give it fluids. Put it in a box or sack in a warm, dark and quiet place. Immediately call a rehabilitator in your area.

MAMMALS
  1. Baby mammals are often left alone (usually in hiding) while the mother searches for food. Do not disturb!

  2. If it is injured, or if it is ill, or if its burrow or hiding place is destroyed, do not touch it. Wild animals with rabies may act friendly.

  3. Immediately call a rehabilitator in your area.

COMO AYUDAR ANIMALES SALVAJES EN PROBLEMAS

PAJAROS ANIDANDOS - Pajaritos que aun no han emplumado.

  1. Recojalo con su mano. Si se siente frio al tocarlo, calientelo suavemente en su mano. Los papas del pajarito le aceptaran aun si ud. lo ha tocado.

  2. Regrese el pajarito a su nido si es posible. Muchas veces sera necesario volver a reponer el nido si se ha caido, reconstruirlo o bien hacer uno nuevo.. Para construir un nido nuevo, utilize una canastita y arreglela haciendole una cama de pasta y hojas. Una vez terminado, asegure el nido en el area del arbol de donde se cayo y acomode el nido con pajaritos dentro.

  3. Si el pajarito, o pajaro se encuentra herido NO LE DE LIQUlDOS. pongalo en una cajita o bolsa en un lugar obscuro, silencioso y calientito. Y llame inmediatamente al telefono que aparece al calce.

PAJAROS EMPLUMANDOS - Pajaritos que estan emplumando y aprendiendo a volar.

  1. Si se encuentra pajaritos emplumando en el suelo, recojalos y pongalos en un arbol o arbusto. Los papas volaran hacia ellos y los alimentaran. Recuerde poner sus gates o perras dentro de la casa o en algun lugar segura para que no molesten al pajarito. Tomara como unos tres dias para que el pajarito aprenda a volar. El volar no viene natural debe ser aprendido.

  2. Si el pajarito, o pajaro se encuentra herido NO LE DE LIQUIDOS. Pongalo en una cajita o bolsa en un lugar obscuro, silencioso y calientito. Llame inmediatamente al telefono que aparece al calce.

CRIAS DE MAMIFEROS.

  • 1. Las crias de animales mamiferos generalmente las dejan salas las mamas (usualmente escondidas) cuando salen a buscar comida. NO LAS MOLESTE!

  • 2. Si la cria esta lastimada o enferma o su madriguera/escondite destrozada NO LO TOQUE. Animales salvajes con rabia pueden actuar amigables. Llame inmediatamente al telefono que aparece al calce.

Please Note: All native birds (except starlings, house sparrows and pigeons) and many mammals are protected by Federal Law and keeping them in captivity is illegal unless you are a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Also, in most states many, if not all, native mammals are protected and holding them in captivity without a permit is not legal.
