Let's reflect briefly on what we have seen during our short tour by reading the words
of the late Mr. Clark Champie - scientist, author, poet and a true desert rat.

WHAT IS THE DESERT?
We call you the desert,
But that is only a name.
What really are you?
Are you, as some might say,
Merely a step-child of Nature;
Almost forgotten
In her scheme of things?
A place with mounds of barren sand
Scorched often by the sun,
Cooled seldom by the rain,
A Gehenna to be avoided
By all sensible, living things?
Or, are you, perhaps, a land
Of stark simplicity
Possessor of a fragile beauty
Friendly only to those forms of life
Which learn to live in harmony
With your many moods,
And hostile to all other kinds?
