Red-tailed Hawk Rescue

While helping at the C.D.W.R. booth at the "Day at the Bosque" event it was reported that there was a hawk in a nearby tree that appeared to be in distress. Susie, our treasurer and newsletter editor, volunteered to climb the thorny screwbean mesquite tree to investigate. She was able to safely capture the bird and it was immediately transferred to a rehabilitator and taken to a veterinarian for a medical exam.

The hawk had, apparently, collided with something, possibly power lines. It seemed to have suffered a severe concussion and was unable to see at all. Soon after, the bird slipped into a coma and died.

Red-tailed hawks are frequently received by C.D.W.R. and are often so severely injured that they do not survive..
