 Xochipili

All phases of the lives of the Aztec people were dominated by religion.  Every activity from the highest to the lowest was under some deity, and over all of them ruled Huitzilopochtli.  Connected to their temples they built schools for warriors and priests, music and dance. Xochipili is an Aztec god of music, singing, and dance.  There is a statue of him in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia.

The Aztecs believed that dance, song and sacrifice would help to win favors from the gods.  They danced on feast days, sometimes as many as a thousand at a time, asking for blessings in marriages, births, healing, hunting, rain, harvest, and war as well as every other part of ther life.

Xochipili is the principle god of dance.  Together with his wife Xochiquetzali they formed the most popular divine couple in the Mexican graveyard.  Everything that signifies pleasure such as music, singing, flowers, happiness, and love are realms under their domain.

Xochipili

is the name chosen for the Bowie High School performing dance company.
