 Who Are the Dancers?

Members 1996-97

Luis Martin Martinez is an athlete who plays basketball. "Through dancing I express my pride in the Mexican culture. I am really proud to be in Bowie Folklorico Tenochtitlan. I also focus on my education because I know it will lead me to a better life."

Juan Ornelas is 5'8" weighing 140 pounds, kind of long hair, shy, with a good sense of humor. "In my spare time I write poems about what happens to me during the week. I rollerblade, cook, exercise, play sports and just hang around. I would like to know about the backgrounds of other folklorico dancers and see pictures of them and their school."

Arturo Estrada joined the group because "my mother alsways dreamed of seeing me dance folklorico. Second, I always liked it and wanted to learn. Last, I joined folklorico because I think all Chicanos should know a little bit of their ancestors traditions.

Victor Prieto would like to find out about other folklorico groups; their names, ages, pictures, what dances they do, other activities, and how many people are in their class. "I am 15 years old, around 5'5" or 5'6" weighing 121 pounds with short wavy hair. I am a fresa and have a good sense of humor."

Victor Alvarez joined folklorico because he likes to dance. It keeps him in good shape for cross country and, most important, it's part of his culture. "In my spare time I like to play guitar. I am in a band with one of my brothers."

Paola Naranja loves Mexican food. Her favorite dishes are enchiladas and mole. She wants to be a model. Her hobbies are listening to music and dancing.

Vianney Dominguez got involved in folklorico because she likes to dance and to do things after school. "After high school I will continue with school, working towards a medical carreer."

Araceli Madrid "The main reason I joined folklorico is because I have friends in there who started without knowing anything, and now they are real good at it. I love to see them perform and I decided that if they could learn, I can too. I would like to know what kind of dances other groups dance, about their costumes, have they earned any special awards and where do they perform?"

Nancy Maldonado, 15, plans on being a veterinarian because of her love of animals. The movement of the skirts when dancing Jalisois what inspired her to join folklorico. "I would like to see how other groups dance the songs that we dance.

Imelda Moreno would love to practice every day for at least two hours. In her spare time she likes to walk around the park with her friends to check out the guys. "I also like to play volleyball, basketball and sometimes even tag." Imelda would like to ask other folklorico dancers "Do you get to pick the partners for the dances you are going to do, or does a teacher put you in partners? Have you ever been to any important places to perform?"

Hector Escobar says "it's nice for me to get an opportunity to represent the dances of the place where I was born, Mexico City. I like to listen to music, go to the park, play soccer, and dance."

Maria Hernandez loves Mexican traditions, and sees folklorico as part of those traditions. "I love to dance and I enjoy spending time with my friends while learning new things."

Marisol Negrete enjoys listening to music by Selena as she does her homework.

Yesenia Leon would like to know if dancers in other folklorico groups dance with their boyfriends like we do. "I like folklorico 'cause of all the colors it delivers. I love the way it feels when you have the dress on and move it to the rhythm of the song. When I hear the sound the zapateado makes, I feel excitement in my stomach. The songs make me feel proud of my culture."

Gaby Torres, 14 years old, really enjoys buying a "bag of potato chips with lemon and chile and just [] down on the sofa and watch TV, especially the talk shows."

Daisy Telles likes to read a lot of romance novels in her spare time. "I usually hang out with my friends after school. Some days I go to the French club, and if I'm not there I am in a calculator practice. I wish more guys would join folklorico so all the girls could have a partner."
